At the beginning, a woman explains her most recent suicide attempt and how she attempts one every ten years. Wrapped into this twenty-eight stanza poem, a story of suicide and resurrection is constructed. Written in the last few months before her death, it becomes an insight into her thoughts and feeling during this time period. However, what is presented differs largely from conventional poetry that is normally seen as pleasant with a romantic take. Lady Lazarus is presented in the mode of poetry like the vast majority of Plath’s other writing. With this in mind, it is still surprising to note the differences between Plath’s novel, The Bell Jar, and one of her well known pieces, Lady Lazarus. Plath decided not to publish her first novel under her true name due to the similarities that can be drawn between her life and the book but also due to the fact that she believed it was not a good representation of her writing. As originally published, The Bell Jar was written by Victoria Lucas who was only a pseudonym concocted by Sylvia herself. Victoria Lucas’s and Sylvia Plath’s writing could not seem any more different from one another but surprisingly, the authors are one in the same.
